Subject: More CRT dashboards
Message:
I was referred by a mutual friend to a Lagonda owner in the states.

He was having trouble with the non functioning screens amongst other things.

After having done much research re. the design it became obvious that there are two distinct ways in which the screens are controlled, presumably dependant upon the build date of the car.

I went out to the car and was able to resurrect the instrument displays, after finding and sorting out problems with both the CRT high voltage circuits and low voltage computer feeds.

I have noted with interest the comments re. the need for good batteries and alternators.

The system is designed so that a varying battery voltage of between maybe 11 to 15/16 volts is regulated to a fixed 12 volt supply to the screens coupled with a controlled lower voltage supply to the computer.

Therefore I think that some of the faults "cured" by the fitment of a battery etc are perhaps bypassing a fault within one of the three control units (voltage doublers) on early cars or the later power supply unit.

It became clear to me that cleanliness and integrity of the (many) electrical connections throughout the system, including within the computer itself, is essential.

I had no trouble with booting up the screens once I had solved the problems, so I think that these dead periods are due to another failure else where, most likely a dry joint in a key circuit board.

I "cut my teeth" figuring out the 1980's digital dashboard equipped Jaguars and the later models, as complicated in their own way, if not more so!

I would be interested in looking at any CRT cars and also the EFI versions should there be problems.

Any one who may wish to contact me can do so by e-mail or telephone on Nottingham 0115 982 2808.

Your comments are really interesting - not least because of a basis in fact/technical knowledge!

The instrument binnacles (to the left and right of the steering wheel) are backlit in green, with red pinlights set into the switches themselves.

My left hand binnacle green backlight is no longer working....I am told the only serviceable part is a voltage invertor(£170+VAT) although the garage aren't exactly sure this will solve the problem....any ideas??? I used to live in Nottingham. ?

Mike,

The only replaceable part is the invertor, this and the supplies to and from it can be tested.

However the fault I found with the binnacle in the US was that the wire soldered to the underside of the ledgend panel had come away.

I was fortunate with this as the heat etc had caused the plastic to lift away slightly from the binnacle, exactly what should be used to readhese it, I am not sure.

It can be accessed from underneath but the binnacle requires complete removal from the car as (at least on the one I looked at) there are numerous small fibre shims between the switch plate and the top plate.

I hope this helps, otherwise I would be happy to take a look, the garage is in the Wilford area of Nottingham, the South West side, not far from J24 M1.

i just purchased an 86 last week. on the 4 hour drive home for 3 and a quarter hours the crt screens worked properly, then they started to act up. the seller of the car to whom i inquired of the problem advised that if necessary the crt units can be repaired and that they were obtained by aston from a company in the states, the javelina corp., rt 2 box 322, frisco texas 75034. phone 972-377-9807. i have my fingers crossed that they'll somehow repair themselves!
